Overview of 2003-2004

1. The TLC co-sponsored, with the Agribusiness Economics and Management (AEM) Section, the pre-conference workshop “Food and Agribusiness Management Education: Preparing Students for an Evolving Industry.” The workshop was well attended (100+ participants).

2. A TLC track of six organized symposiums featured 32 moderators and presenters.

Curricular Challenges in Limited-Resource Departments: A Cross-Border Approach
Evaluation of the Impact of Teaching Innovations
Application of Team Based Learning in Economics
Non-Tenure Track Faculty in Teaching Programs: An Emerging Trend?
Early Career Teaching Challenges: Preparing, Coping and Overcoming Strategies
Successful Teaching Strategies of the 2003 AAEA Award Recipients

Overview of 2004-2005

1. The proposed TLC track (organized by Leah Greden Mathews) for the Providence meeting features seven sessions: six organized symposiums and a selected paper session to be determined in collaboration with the Selected Papers Review Process. The proposed organized symposiums are:

Is Good Teaching Bad for Your Career?
Teaching Tips from Top Teachers: 2004 AAEA Award Recipients
Simulations as a Pedagogical Tool: Which Characteristics Improve Learning?
Student Participation in Undergraduate Discipline-Related Organizations: How Can We Get Students (and Faculty) Involved?
Recruiting and Retaining Quality Undergraduate Students: Selling Our Programs to New Audiences
Graduate Student Recruitment: Issues and Strategies in Agricultural and Applied Economics, and Agribusiness

Thirty-one AAEA members are scheduled to moderate or make presentations in these symposiums.

2. The TLC-sponsored pre-conference workshop proposal “Words Work: Using Writing and Speaking to Teach Critical Thinking Skills” was organized by Molly Espey and Chris McIntosh. This workshop will feature Chris Anson, Professor and Director of Campus Writing and Speaking Program, North Carolina State University and current President of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The design of this workshop will create a learning environment for faculty and graduate students actively involved in teaching, research, and extension. Professor Anson will assist on and off-campus teachers in how to integrate short or informal writing assignments and group discussion into their courses/presentations in order to help listeners become more effectively engaged in the learning process without placing an additional time burden on faculty member. Unfortunately, the funding request for this workshop proposal was not approved by the AAEA Foundation.

3. The TLC leadership is working with the Graduate Student Section to develop an organized symposium, or even a jointly sponsored pre-conference, on teaching and learning for the 2006 AAEA meeting. Our hope is that the Graduate Student Section will work with the TLC on a regular basis to promote teaching skills among the AAEA’s young professionals.

4. We are developing a website for the TLC that will serve as a teaching/learning resource for the AAEA’s membership. Our hope is to have the site up and running by March 2005.
